Housing

The Housing Office is located in the City Hall building. Housing staff provides a number of services for the New Ulm Community and the surrounding area:

  • Garden Terrace Apartments: The Economic Development Authority (EDA) owns Garden Terrace Apartments, which are market-rate rentals. Lloyd Management manages the day to day operations.
  • Homebuyer Assistance Program: This program provides EDA funds to buyers for the down payment and closing costs to purchase a home in New Ulm.
  • Public Housing Program: The EDA owns and manages 50 Public Housing units; 40 units at the Broadway Haus Apartments and 10 units are rental houses scattered around New Ulm. Public housing tenants pay rent based on their income.
  • Rental Properties: The EDA owns and manages one market-rate rental house and one vacant parking lot that has occasionally been rented to businesses.
  • Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program: The EDA administers 124 vouchers for Brown County. This program provides low-income households with rental assistance in the private rental market.

Legal Assistance

If you are a low-income renter, Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services (SMRLS) may be able to provide free legal help to assist in resolving issues with your landlord. If you do not qualify for assistance from SMRLS, the State of Minnesota Attorney General's Office provides a Landlords and Tenants Rights and Responsibilities booklet.
