The U.S. - Dakota War of 1862: A Historical Context with Colin Mustful
Tuesday, August 16, 2022
Join the New Ulm Public Library on Tuesday, August 16 at 6:30 PM for an insightful presentation on Minnesota history. The U.S. – Dakota War of 1862 was a watershed event with a major, long-lasting impact. But what was the U.S. – Dakota War and how and why did it happen? In this presentation, Mustful traces the history of the war beginning in 1805 when the Dakota signed the Pike Treaty at Bdote. Throughout the presentation, Mustful identifies the multiple perspectives and factors that, over time, contributed to the Mankato hanging and the expulsion of the Dakota and Ho-Chunk peoples from Minnesota to Crow Creek, South Dakota. This free program is made possible by a grant provided by the Traverse des Sioux Library Cooperative and funded with money from Minnesota's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
