Emergency Management Awareness of Potential Spring Flooding

Emergency Management

Emergency Management has some concern with flooding in New Ulm within the next six weeks, due to our unique location of having two rivers, the Minnesota River & Cottonwood River, meet within our city.   Due to this reason, we are dealing with water from a large geographical area.   The recent drought has reduced some of the flooding impact; however, there is a very large snow cover throughout Minnesota.

At this time, it is unknown of how much precipitation New Ulm will receive within the next six weeks that could make the flooding worse.   Flood preparation for homeowners include:

  1. Have a home evacuation plan, especially, if you live near a river.
  2. Consider purchasing flood insurance through a licensed insurance agent.
  3. Use our emergency notification system, which will notify you of upcoming warnings.
