Diseased Tree Removal in Boulevard - Q & A
- Who is responsible for removing diseased trees in the boulevards?
-
It is the property owner’s responsibility to remove the diseased trees in their adjacent boulevard area. The city did remove some Ash trees in boulevards through DNR grants, but the city did not receive grant money this year for more removals.
- Who removes the stumps in the boulevards?
-
The City of New Ulm, Street Department will remove stumps in the boulevard after the tree is removed by the property owner.
- Do you need a tree removal permit for removing diseased trees in the boulevard?
-
Yes, all property owners are required to get a tree removal permit to remove any tree in the boulevard. There is no fee for the permit. The permit helps us track where stumps need to be removed by the street department, it also helps us track what kind of tree has been removed and for what reason. Tree Planting, Pruning and Removal Permits can be completed online or obtained at the City Hall Engineering Department by stopping in or calling (507) 359-8245.
- Is there reimbursement money for diseased trees?

Yes, there is reimbursement money for boulevard and private yard diseased trees.
Boulevard trees have a reimbursement of half the cost of removal up to a maximum reimbursement of $75.00 per diseased tree. Private yard trees have a reimbursement of one-third the cost of removal up to a maximum reimbursement of $50.00 per diseased tree. (see note)
NOTE:
- Reimbursements for boulevard trees is limited to three trees per property per calendar year unless the property has multiple street frontages (corner houses), in which case the limit of reimbursement will be six trees per calendar year.
