The New Ulm Human Rights Commission sponsors an annual poster, essay and video contest.
Poster Topic
Create a poster of a leader uniting people of all different backgrounds.
- Poster Contest is open to students from Kindergarten to 12th grade in New Ulm area schools.
- Poster can be in any medium but no bigger than 20” x 30“
- Contest is open October 1, 2024 to November 1, 2024
- Prizes are $100 for first place entry in each of the four categories: K-3rd grade, 4th-6th grade, 7th- 9th grade, and 10th-12th grade. There will also be two random participation awards of $25 among K-12th grade entries. First place winners are not eligible for random participation awards.
Essay Topic
If you were president, what is one law you would make to ensure equal opportunities and participation in the areas of business, credit, education, employment, housing, public accommodations, or public service for people of all different backgrounds.
- Essay Contest is open to students in 5th - 12th grade in New Ulm area schools.
- Essay should be one to three pages in length and double-spaced in 12pt. font.
- Suggested references include the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the United States Bill of Rights or the Minnesota Human Rights Act.
- Contest is open October 1, 2024 to November 1, 2024

Video Topic:
If you were president, what is one law you would make to ensure equal opportunities and participation in the areas of business, credit, education, employment, housing, public accommodations, or public service for people of all different backgrounds?
- Video contest is open to students in 5th – 12th grade in New Ulm area schools.
- Entries should be no more than ten minutes in length.
- Contest is open October 1, 2024 to November 1, 2024.
- Prizes are $100 first place in each of the two categories: 5th–8th grade and 9th–12th grade. There will also be two random participation awards of $25 among 5th–12th grade entries. First place winners are not eligible for random participation awards. Prizes are total per entry, not per student involved in each video.
- Submitted videos may be featured on New Ulm Community Access Television, screened on YouTube, and/or other promotional venues.
- Video entries need a signed waiver/release form for every person appearing in the video and/or participating in the video production.
- Submit video to https://cityofnewulm.sharefile.com/i/ic92b9406feb42398 An email address will be needed to register and then video can be uploaded.
A completed entry form should be attached to the back of the poster, clipped to end of essay, or submitted with video. Entries must be submitted to City Hall, 100 North Broadway, second floor, Administration Office by November 1st or arrangements can be made for poster and essay contest entries to be picked up at your school. Poster and essay entries will be on public display at a location to be determined.
