[ARCHIVED] Natural Gas Peak Alert

Gas Stove

New Ulm Public Utilities (NUPU) is notifying customers of the recent increase in natural gas prices. The increase in natural gas prices is affecting many areas of the country including New Ulm. Please be aware that the price of natural gas will remain high due to the extreme cold weather in the region. Now is an important time to be mindful of energy use, but especially mindful with natural gas usage.

Ways to help yourself and us reduce natural gas consumption:

  • Turn down your thermostat. During cold weather, setting a thermostat at 68 degrees while people are awake and at home is a good practice. While asleep or away, turn the thermostat down.
  • Minimize doing laundry if possible. If you need to do laundry, use cold water to reduce water heater usage. Many water heaters in the community use natural gas.
  • Taking a shower uses much less water than filling up a bathtub. A shower only uses 10 to 25 gallons, while a bath takes up to 70 gallons! By doing this you also save on water heater usage.
  • Avoid using natural gas appliances to cook. Use a toaster oven or microwave.

Thank you and stay safe.
